In a recent interview with Formula E CEO, Autosport.com asked about the vehicles that will be used in the second season of racing.

The first season all used the same vehicles, but in the second season, the racing teams will be able to develop their own cars with different technologies.

As of October 31, Formula E had received 12 applications for vehicles. Formula E CEO expects 6-8 will sign up after negotiations are made on the direction Formula E should go.

Quote:
“They are a mix of car manufacturers and others are technology companies – which is a really different option for us, so ones that produce batteries, electric motors or even a full powertrain – and we will find out who has been successful in the next week.

“We will then have meetings to clearly define their roadmap of the technology level of the championship.”

“It’s very important to develop a five-year roadmap to define the clear direction that this championship is going to go.”

“We need to decide what areas can be developed and what can not – but the focus must remain on the electric powertrain.”

“We will have the competition that we’ve always wanted to have that will improve the technology.”

Formula E says some 'big names' have applied to the series... Renault built the current vehicles, BMW already supports Formula E by providing pace vehicles (the i3 and i8 have been used) so maybe they will give racing a try. And what about Tesla? They are definitely a big name in electric vehicles, and their P85D drivetrain would make a great start to a race car!
